Hi,
Craig Ambrose is an old mate, and he put me on to you.
Apparently you're the guy to talk to about networking. We have a need for someone of your talents. Care to talk about work?

They make me so mad!
Imagine what the rescue world could do if they had access to the advertising agencies and money the LDH do.
If only they put as much effort into helping the animals in their care as they do into creating and maintaining their public image.

There's certainly some resistance to using it at work on that basis. Most ops guys I know see the idea of compiling anything from source on a production server (when you could use the package manager) as a lot of work that adds complexity/risk.

No, we don't.

And while Wayne hasn't actually come out and said it, he runs RVM as a tool for developers: frequent updates, shit breaks every so often, moving target, recommend that you always use the latest version, etc etc.

We had RVM on our Ubuntu images for a while, and having ". /usr/local/rvm/scripts/rvm && rvm use ruby-1.9.2 && ..." before every command was a pain, as was managing .rvmrc files "what do you mean the deploy hung? Oh, it's waiting for somebody to type Y to trust the rvmrc"

All issues that can be worked around, but it's still a pain.

Since moving to a CentOS image with a locked Ruby-1.9.2 install things have been much easier. It's always ruby 1.9.2, it's always the one gemset, and bundler does the heavy lifting of making sure gems match their projects.

My recommendation: build images/machines for each version of ruby you need. If this becomes a problem, it's a sign that you're using too many different versions of ruby, not that you should be using outside of your local dev environment.

Well done Mike..... I applaude your persistence and determination. What I find incomprehensible, is Pounds like LDH and GAWS in Geelong, are offered assistance and provided with incredible models throughout Australia and Internationally, and yet, they prefer to fight tooth and nail to hang on to their backward, inadequate systems that only go to highlight their short sigthedness and lack of vision! It's time these pounds upadated their systems, their culture and hence their management!

The saddest part is that they won't refute what I've said because they know it's true.

Well done Mike. Something needs to be done about the Lost Dogs Home. Everything you've said is spot-on, it's so sad.
